God is writing my life story...

Thanksgiving Day

I must admit, today has not went as planned. Up at 5am on the road to San An only to be in FW 8 hours later; nothing accomplished. LONG story. But no matter how upset I want to be, I am reminded that it can't compare to those who are much less fortunate than I am. So I'm thankful to God today for even waking me up this morning at 5am because He didn't have to; I'm thankful for my family who's spread out all over FW today but yet are still in the land of the living; Thankful for my new husband and our 1st Thanksgiving day together and so thankful for my mind being stable and able to once again give Him praise and remain humble in spite of myself. Happy Happy THANKSgiving day to you guys!

60 days

Happy 60 Day anniversary to me!!

60 days ago I married my friend. My bestest. We have had a very short relationship having only started dating again in December of 2012 (first time was in 2008). But it seems like we've known each other forever.  Darren makes it easy to be comfortable and for me to be myself.

Embrace the changes, explore all the choices

Since my last blog post things have drastically changed in my life. It is absolutely amazing to me how time and chance can effect your life in ways that you never imagined.
I think we sometimes sit and think about what we would like to happen in our lives and how we would like them to happen.
But when we move out the way, sit back and say "I give", God steps in and takes our little plans and literally flips them upside down, we are in a place of total AWE!
I'm in awe of how my life has developed and progressed over the past few months.
I've made and implemented more major decisions in the past 12 months than most people in my circle of life will ever make in their entire lives!
Who do you know would just uproot their life and move over 1200 miles from home "just because" they've always wanted to?
Who do you know would risk their careers on following their heart?
Who do you know would leave family, friends, grand kids, children, just to explore an inner longing?
Not many.
But I wouldn't change one single thing. Because it is the culmination of those things and the choices collectively that brought me here. And here is where I've always initially wanted to be.
It's amazing how all things eventually come together again, and hopefully, they come together for the better.
Regardless of how things may seem to others, and I know in my case it seemed crazy, follow your passions, your dreams, your heart. You only have one life to live and its YOURS to live! Live it!
Embrace change, explore all the choices that lie ahead and enjoy the complexities of this life.

Being a Good Mentor...

I found this post on the US Chamber of Commerce website for women in business and wanted to share. Enjoy!

Did You Know It's National Mentoring Month?

Sarah Johnson |  | Comments (0)
John Crosby once said that mentoring is “a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.” January is officially National Mentoring Month according to this Presidential Proclamation.   So now is the time to take a moment and help an aspiring entrepreneur or executive grow.
Here are some tips on being a good mentor.
  • Be a Role Model – Mentors look up to you; so give them a reason to. If you don’t act in a manner someone would want to emulate, then you probably aren’t mentoring anyone.
  • Don’t Blow off Your Mentee – If you’ve embraced the role as a mentor, you’ve embraced your mentee. If you aren’t invested in your mentee, then you are just wasting her time.
  • Share – The mentee needs to learn from her mentor, what are you teaching them? Simply sharing your experiences and insights is more than enough, but you have to make sure that’s what you are actually doing – never assume.
  • Build Confidence – As a mentor, it is your job to help build the confidence of your mentee. Acknowledge their achievements and celebrate their success, you’d be amazed at how far a little positive encouragement can go.
  • Be Credible – If you’re willing to take on a mentee, that’s great! Do you, however, have the credibility? Mentors need to be established in whatever subject or profession they are mentoring in. If you lack credibility, you probably shouldn’t seek out a mentee.
  • Be Fair – You don’t have to be best friends, but you should be fair to your mentee. They are looking up to you for help in finding their way.

Commit to life!

2013 is quickly approaching! And in the spirit of tradition we will begin to make New Year Resolutions. I’m a great believer in resolutions; starting fresh, starting over and even starting again. But this year, try a new tradition of committing to enjoying life.

Outside of your normal ‘weight loss, exercise more resolutions’, resolve to commit more time to things like getting more rest. A great night’s sleep allows your body to rejuvenate; allowing for clear thinking, a better attitude and better productivity. Secondly, laugh more! Laughter really is good for the soul. Count the times you’ve had a bad day and after laughing at something silly you felt so much better! So laugh more! Third, turn off the TV and get involved in the best reality show ever; YOURS! Create a “Life List” of things you’d like to do in 2013 and DO THEM. Fourth; Volunteer. Volunteer and then Volunteer. Need I say Volunteer again? And my personal favorite is to create a trail of beauty. Surround yourself with beautiful people (spiritually and mentally), beautiful fresh flowers, a clean car, (yes, a clean car) and a beautiful, intimate space in your home. Beautiful surroundings will clear your mind of the clutter from life and work. And finally, commit to daily spiritual deposits. There’s a saying, “You are what you eat”. This applies to your spiritual diet as well. Look at your spiritual plate and make sure its well balanced.

Resolve in 2013 to commit to life by living at peace, living happy and just living. Period. “There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God...” Eccl 2:24

An Ordinary Woman; Prov 22:6

Being the mother of two men and the grandparent of one little boy and one beautiful little girl is somewhat overwhelming to me some 23 years later. I never imagined I would be a "grand" at such a young age. But now that God has placed me in this role it has taught me more about myself than I ever could have imagined.
I've realized that parenting for many is a learned skilled, it didn't just come natural for me like it did for so many of my other friends in the same role. I had to learn how to discipline and how to manage my time and theirs while maintaining who I am. I had to learn how to be patient while encouraging them in their gifts; which are many. I had to pray hard, read a few motivational books, search through parenting magazines and study the Bible for direction and new ways to be the best mommy I could possibly be.
No one likes to admit these things; that parenting doesn't come natural for everyone. But I will. I believe that if we weren't ashamed to admit it, then many of us moms wouldn't find ourselves suffering from issues like depression, postpartum and anger that we suppress deep inside because of the stigma society places on us. I've made many mistakes and sometimes wish I could start at the beginning. But, I can not. So, I must look in the mirror and say to myself, "Sheila, you did the best that you knew how to do", and trust that God will continue to do a complete work in my sons.
As I look back, I can honestly say I enjoyed being a mother. I enjoyed carrying my boys for nine months in my womb. I enjoy watching them develop into the great men they are becoming. And now my men (well one of them) has a little man and little lady of his own. My second chance, as I see it, to embrace my son and encourage him and teach him how to be the best father that he can possibly be. I'm no different than many, I'm just an ordinary woman who had to learn to be the best mother (and now grandmother) that I can possibly be.

Stronger, Wiser... I Followed my HEART

Recently I decided to move to Florida. I didn't have a reasonable reason, nor did I feel I needed one. I simply wanted to move away and so I did. I followed MY heart.

People didn't understand my decision and that's justifiable because I admit I didn't understand it myself.  I just knew that I had to go. I had to leave Texas. It wasn't about a man or a mouse; but about me.  I'd always wanted to move away and see what was "out there". If there was something better, greater, more appealing than what I'd grown used to for the 43 years I've been on this earth. But then again, I honestly just needed to get away.  :)

And so I ventured out with my heart in my hands... God leading...  while I consulted with my GPS for directions. It's been a 3 month journey that has been very interesting and full of discovering just who Sheila is.  I used my blog to post things that were on my mind and in my heart... I journaled more... read more... understood more.  I began to consult with God more than I ever have in my life... I began to listen to the beat of my heart more closely... I could hear my thoughts... my cries... feel myself inhale and exhale... sometimes... almost... audibly.  I began to see my life clearer than ever. I came to peace with who I am and discovered that I march to the beat of my own drums.

I can honestly say that it has been great...I met so so many people... honed my craft as a stylist, gained new energy for my career and realized that I am actually great at what I do! I fell deeper in love with Christ... leaning and depending on Him for every move I made, calling on Him when it would become so achingly lonely... and laughing when He would renew my strength after I thought I couldn't make it another day. I re-discovered the ministry that God placed in me when I was in the 8th grade... I've got to get busy and be about His business! I also discovered that every state I visited brought a new culture of people... a change in the climate... a new discovery. And with each new personal introduction I discovered a little bit more about me... I'm not so bad after all!

I also realized who is really a friend, foe, enemy, family, loved one etc... I discovered who really and truly cares about me.  It's an odd sort of people who makes the phrase "out of sight, out of mind" popular.  That statement is disheartengly true. People will forget you as soon as you move out of their comfort zone. Why do we expect others to crawl into our box and not get out? People aren't comfortable when you step out in faith and do what they are afraid to do. It's the crab mentality... that's why YOU have to follow YOUR own heart!

I've visited 5 states (maybe 6, I need to check) and numerous cities in just 3 months. In one day alone I enjoyed breakfast in Florida, lunch in downtown Atlanta and dinner in the lovely state of Alabama! I googled upon a church ministry that impacted me more than I ever expected... worked in salons that opened my eyes to some new ideas and concepts... met clients who encouraged my skills. Everyday was full of renewed purpose.  I would have NEVER experienced days like that if I hadn't followed my heart. The person God created in YOU is too big to be chained to the demands of others!

So, here I am... traveling state by state back to my home of TX.... and I'm not dismayed nor am I discouraged... I'm ENCOURAGED. I'm sure their are those waiting in the shadows to say, "I told you so", but really what they will be saying to me is that they didn't have it in them to do what I did. And that's ok. I'm stronger because of the journey and wiser because I did it... ALONE... against all odds. I made it through! What started out as a moved evolved into a mission. God will always get His way! FOLLOW YOUR HEART to where ever God is leading you... don't allow others to hold you back. Do whatever it is to get the breakthrough you need and I promise you... you'll never feel the same again. You'll be glad you did... I am.

"Your sons and daughters will prophesy.."

"'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams."

I wanted to share with you two people that I think are a force for the devil to reckon with. I enjoy listening to powerful women and men preach the gospel and this young lady, Evangelist
Bridgette Wright blesses me every time I can find something on her to listen to or watch. She is anointed truly and so very humble. It is a double blessing when they are young and dedicated to see their visions and dreams come to past regardless of what this world says! Gods Word is still the only map for our lives and we can live holy if we so choose. I hope and pray that you enjoy. And if so, google her for more videos etc and/or visit Evangelist Bridgette Wright on Facebook.

And Courtney Meadows... Omg, is all I can say. Blessed my lil socks off when he preached about a month ago at Majestic Life Ministries in Orlando. I was in awe when he said he was only 19 years old! Enjoy and visit Courtney Meadows when you get a chance.  And if you ever have an opportunity to hear either of them in person, make yourself available. You will not be disappointed.

Cool stuff... hope you like!

I search the web often looking for "stuff". And you can find all kinds of products on the worldwide web! And look what I discovered. Shadow Shields! Although their have been times when I've often thought how great it would be if I had something I could place under my eyes in order that the shadow dust wouldn't mess up my foundation, I NEVER knew their was a product already created for that.  However, I must say, I wouldn't purchase Shadow Shields for myself because I'm a nifty self inventor and I've managed to come up with my own remedy to this issue. And plus I wear makeup way too often to justify the expense. I would, maybe, only use them for when I'm doing a makeup party, brides etc., just because they give the client a feeling of professionalism. I usually just place tissue under the eye area and keep it moving. Or I clean the area up after and put on the foundation once I'm finished with everything else.
But for those of you who would be interested in this product called Shadow Shields, here's a nice video tutorial on it.

Another product I found that I really am excited about is Too Faced Shadow Insurance Glitter Bond! Have you ever placed your shadow glitter on only to look up and its on your nose, your cheek, your lashes?! Everywhere but where you put it! Well, this little bitty ensy bitsy tube (it's little) will hold that glitter right where you want it. I think its the coolest little thing. I knew they had glue for more dramatic and costumey type looks, but it was heavy etc., and just not what I'd want on MY face. You know what I mean? So, after YouTubin' and researching products I was discovering from many of my favorite beauty bloggers and MUA, I've found this one to do what I want and feel like I want.

Enjoy ladies and let me know what you think!

Ombre' Glitter Nails and My FOTD

I don't polish my fingernails often but yesterday I tried this new ombré glittery look. I think it came out pretty cool. I used China Glaze nail polish color in For Audrey. It's kinda sea foam'ish in color to me. And then I faded it with the L.A Girl glitter polish in Jostle (the dark blue bottle in the middle). I used Spoiled glitter polish in Pet My Peacock on my ring fingers (next to the dark blue bottle, it has bigger sized glitter) and then topped them all with OPI Topcoat. Not so bad for my first attempt, kinda 'kewt'.
My FOTD: My cousin asked me if I wanted to go to a comedy show at the last minute last night. And when I say last minute, I mean I had 30 minutes to get dressed; hair, makeup and all! So, I jumped up, grabbed some clothes, threw them on and ran to the mirror. And here's the result of the makeup look I created in about 10 minutes. The ONLY reason I added the glitter is because I just purchased my Too Faced Shadow Insurance glitter bond and I just HAD to try it out. You know we can't wait to try our new products! Lol! Other than that it would've been just basic brown colors and a little gold. Btw, the glitter bond works great and my glitter didn't move!

P.S: I need a better camera, the colors are much more noticeable. than what they are showing on the picture. Ugh!! Lol!

Great is thy faithfulness...

When making life changing decisions and praying fervently about which direction you should take; many times it's hard to know what God wants you to do. I know we believe that Gods word is the ultimate map in our lives and all that we ever need can be found in the Word of God. And it is. However, sometimes our good isn't always God. And it's in those times when things seem to get what I consider "a little tricky".

I'm making HUGE life altering decisions in my life. And yes, I'm praying constantly about which route to take. And in all that I'm doing, I feel that God is with me even though I know the world may think I'm losing my mind! :) I'm at peace spiritually although the situation is chaotic. I'm ok with the trials and the tribulations that have come with my choices. But sometimes I ask myself, "are you sure you are on the right path?"

So what do you do when the choices you are making seem to always work out fine? When the decision you chose happened to be a "good" one? When all that you are doing isn't harming anyone and doors seem to open where they should be closed and you seem to excel? When provisions are being made where you know they're shouldn't be any? When those you are encountering are being blessed by a word or a deed that you've done?

You may say, well if its all going great then surely it must be God. But, I say, everything that's great isn't God. I'm at that crossroad. I'm at a place where I have to be sure that I know, that I know, that God is directing my path and not just me doing what's great for me. And at this crossroad I've come to realize that no matter what I do, good- bad- or indifferent, He is always their.  God is ALWAYS with me.  He keeps protecting me from danger. He keeps providing for me.  He keeps comforting me. And He keeps listening to me when I need to talk to Him. He has been a present and constant help.

Psalms 46:1 says "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble".  Lamentations 3:22-24 tells us "It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassion's fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him." The Message Bible says it like this,

"God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out,
his merciful love couldn’t have dried up.
They’re created new every morning.
    How great your faithfulness!
I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over).
    He’s all I’ve got left.

I love that! That is so powerful, "God's loyal love COULDN'T have run out!" Every single day we get a fresh batch of love, loyalty and mercy! He is a faithful God!  At the end of the day, while I'm in this place of being assured that I am hearing God I know that He is my strength, He is with me, He is so faithful and I can put my HOPE IN HIM.

Not many may understand your path and your destiny.  Most will question you because it doesn't make 'sense' to them. But if in your heart and spirit you are at peace according to His word, then stay on that path. Stay in prayer. Stay focused. And stay in God!

What do you say...?

Death does something really strange to me. I know that we all grieve and mourn differently. When those moments have occurred in my life, I choose solitude over the comfort of being around others. I'd rather not discuss what has happened, but reflect inwardly on their life and our times together. It works best for me. However, when the death occurs in the family of someone you love dearly, I have no idea what to do. Do you call, visit, send flowers or what? My friends father passed and I must admit, I hurt for her more than I've hurt for anyone in awhile.  She no longer has either one of her parents with her. How must that feel? I'm blessed that both of my parents are still with me today. I can call, visit and even send them flowers. I've been told that the loss of a parent is something that only those who've experienced it can explain. Or rather not explain.
Because I'm at a loss for words, I found this quote from a site that has zillions of poems for all occasions. I pray for peace and comfort for anyone who has lost a parent. No matter the reason or cause; their is now a void where their was once life and that alone is reason for God's intervention.

"A death in the family leaves a void that cannot be filled. No one can ever take the place of this individual in the world. We should not try to comfort the family by saying that "it was his time anyway", or, "he was suffering". These may be words of comfort later. However, there must be time to mourn the fact that things will never be the same. One minute he was here and now he is gone. The human mind must be allowed to sit with this reality. Mourning is a necessary part of the human experience. If it is ignored, a general feeling of sadness may pervade the whole family."

COMFORT
2 Cor. 1:3-5

Surrounded by friends
yet all alone
the one I loved
God has called home

the hugs of friends
helps ease the pain
and I know my loss
is my loved one's gain

but tears now flow
across my face
as I long for just
one more embrace

then comfort comes
and I see Christ's face
He hugs my loved one
and I feel God's grace.

P.O.S.H'ture Ministry: Sit up straight!

So, I've added the word soul and "'ture" to my acronym P.O.S.H. I did this because as I was "googling" around on the internet, I've come to find that there are a lot of POSH entities.  And although its a name that can not be "taken" by one particular party, I chose to change or add to mines.
I like P.O.S.H'ture though because it keeps me focus on the actual reason that I began all of this in the first place.  The acronym stands for Positioned and Ordered Steps by Him. God has specifically ordered our steps and although we may stray often He's granted us the grace to re-P.O.S.H'ture ourselves to get back on track. Isn't that awesome!
Sometimes you find yourself slumped over while seated at home or even while driving.  And although you're very uncomfortable in this slumped position it takes you a moment to realize that if you'd only reposture yourself that you would be much more comfortable and feel much better. Our backs hurt, neck is in pain when all we needed to do was sit up straight!
Well as it is in the natural, so it is in the spirit.  We are uncomfortable with the sin that we are living in. We're uncomfortable with the awful choices we've made.  And God is saying, re-P.O.S.H'ture yourself and get back on the right track.  It's as simple as that.
He is a God who has made available to us the opportunity to live a life full of promise and prosperity. Posh is defined as living luxurious; a state of quality; of living a blessed life!
Re-P.O.S.H'ture yourself today, get back on track and watch how much more comfortable living a Christian life can be. It's as easy as sitting straight in a chair...

Love the skirt you're in!

I came across some very nice long/maxi skirts while scouring the magazine pages.  I own maybe three and I'm so ready to purchase a few more. During the winter season the length can really come in handy. They can be paired with boots, wedges, and even a pair of loafers/ flats.

Although I'm considered average height, at 5'8" sometimes I feel like I'm a tower! And long skirts make me feel more comfy in my skin sometimes. Any pair of pants, dress or skirt that touches the ground makes me smile :) Maybe it's the way they hang, or how the skirt billows in the wind. But nothing is more fashionably comfortable to me than a long, very long, Maxi skirt. At How To Wear Maxi Skirts, have several tips on some great looks in the Maxi skirt fashion world. Their you'll find pointers on shopping for them and different looks. And like I always say, it's in your closet!

P.O.S.H'ture Ministry: Something about that name Jesus!

The last few weeks have been... well, interesting. School is creeping along. At times I feel as if I'm not going to make it.  It's not that it's hard, it's just that my mind and focus are on so many other things. But I keep pressing on, because I know that'll I'll be closer to the finish line than when I started.
Personally I've been in a place of "meditation" for lack of a better word. It's strange how even in your 40's you are still figuring out this thing called life. When does it end? I guess, never. Everyday I learn more and more about myself that I thought I already knew.
The one thing that has remained constant in my life is the fact that I know I can call on the name of Jesus. If moma didn't teach me anything else, she taught me that theirs no name above the name of Jesus. He is ALWAYS there, He never leaves us. No matter how old I get I know that if I can just get out a whisper of His name He hears me. There's soooo much power in just His name alone! Even when I can't mumble out a prayer, just the sound of His name brings me peace.
That one constant has kept my mind at peace throughout this portion of my journey. I hesitate in thinking of a new shift that I see up the road and that is approaching quickly.  I'm excited, nervous, apprehensive and all the emotions you can imagine all rolled up in one.  But I know that no matter what, God is with me and He is at the wheel.
When you're in that spot of not knowing what to do or where to go, remember to just whisper His name. When you're drowning your pillow in tears, and your eyes are swollen from crying, whisper His name. Sometimes decisions need to be made quickly and with the confusion going on you can't possibly consider the choices before you; we can whisper His name and watch how He works it out! JESUS!!!!!!!!

Living P.O.S.H: Jacksonville Beach

I spent the weekend with a cousin of mines that  I have never had the  opportunity to hang out with, EVER! He escorted me around the great city of Jacksonville, and I had a blast.

I enjoyed listening to him discuss the way men think and giving me his opinions and views on life.  But the best part ever was our stroll at Jax Beach... I love the water! The waves. The sounds. The smell! We sat in a nice spot on the beach and just enjoyed watching the surfers surf.

Afterwards we got a bite to eat at Joe's Crab shack. Delicious!
Sitting on the beach, and watching God's hand at work is so humbling. I can't understand how "man" can not conceive that their is a God out there who could orchestrate such an awesome display of movement on the waters. The waves were so beautiful and peaceful. It was just a great day hanging at the beach.

P.O.S.H. Ministry

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the Sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.
~ C.S Lewis

During one of my opportunities to speak to a group at a local church, I made a joke about how my mom is Jesus' little sister.  Although I said it in a joking manner, I said it in reference to the fact that I've never known my mother not to profess her love for Jesus Christ and her non-wavering faith in God. She has always made it known that she was a Christian. And because I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior at a very young age I am blessed to say I've experienced nothing but Christianity.

My faith is not one layer, it is layer upon layer of building on a solid foundation that started as a child.  I remember in my elementary age years going to church almost daily and experiencing the "presence" of God. Not knowing exactly what it was at the time, I did know that it was a great presence in the room every time we would sing and praise His name and it felt good.  It made you happy even when things in our every day lives were not-so-good. The older people definitely made that clear in the prayers that would go forth on behalf of their bills, mortgages, and food shortages! But, we would still cry "happy tears" of joy, knowing that God would take care of it.

During these formative years of my life, I learned that God created everything; the sun, the moons and the stars, and I never once questioned it. I never considered that He was not the creator of all that we have, including the creator of me!

Our relationship with God has to begin in our unwavering belief that He created us and set us in the midst of His creation.  This first belief will leave no room for another god to enter in.  Building on that solid belief allows us to see Him in everything.  When things are good and when they are bad, we'll know that He is there somewhere taking care of it all. The bible clearly says that He is mindful of us! He is all we need to look to for answers to any question we have. And professing our Christianity acknowledges our appreciation of Him and shows we are proud to be connected! We serve an awesome God, let's tell the world about it!

Psalms 8
O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
